I liked this book and the way that Trevanian was having some fun with the genre by creating such an over the top character but playing it completely straight. The accusations that are thrown at him reminded me of when then Senator Obama was running for President and people were holding up signs with a Hitler mustache under his nose and accusing him of being a Stalinist.
This book manages to hammer and hammer and hammer this message home, whilst making you feel like you are ‘just reading a best seller’. His distaste for all things American runs a bit thick in spots, which may turn some folks away.

Shibumi is elaborately written, using a very extended vocabulary, based on a sound knowledge in history and geopolitics, switching easily from pessimism to wry humor, Shibumi is more than a mere thriller, and may be compared to other works such as Brave New World, Nineteen Eighty-four and Fahrenheit Now that I think of it, is this a pattern: HEAR the clock ticking!

Most people are just too lazy or too content with their own mediocrity. When Japan surrenders inHel, after long months of hunger, finds thanks to his knowledge of many languages a job as an interpreter in the US Occupation Army and becomes a decoder agent in United States Intelligence. Decades later, Hel has retired to his chateau in the mountains with the Basque where he indulges in his hobby of spelunking.
There are a couple of long sections in the book in which the author describes spelunking expeditions—a hard thing to do and keep it interesting. However, I have seldom read or listened to a more inept, poorly-written thriller, and the comparison to the three great works referred to is ludicrous. He can kill any opponent, bed any woman, and presumably bed any opponent Russian go-playing assassins with bottle-green eyes and 4th level lovemaking abilities.
Trevanian shows great vision in discussing these issues and yet never loses his sense of humor about it. I read Proust, but not much else written in the 20th century. His one asset is his knowledge of languages.
The Gentlemen’s Hour Don Winslow. Having a lot of time on my hands at the moment, I inhaled the book in a matter of a few days, which is fast for me. Trevanian was a staunch anti-materialist.
